| | anxious | ] | I know this has been asked about before, umpteen times, but I've been thinking about going on some kind of medication to help with the b/p madness. I usually purge about once a day, but it's an agonizing, demoralizing effort, even though it's "successful" for the most part.....Once a fucking day, how hard would that be to give up? Near impossible it would seem.....I know Prozac is now being prescribed for bulimia, and some have had good results with Welbutrin, and they supposedly don't cause weight gain. I've googled , and wiki-ed the hell out of these things, but I trust what YOU guys have to say more than any random info on the internet.
I don't have health insurance, but I could go to public health for the referral, although I'd probably have to pay for my own meds.....which are no doubt expensive as hell.
Any thoughts, experience, advice?
Thank you darlings. |

I've been on 30mg of Prozac for a while now to no effect b/p-wise. I had more success managing my bulimic symptoms while on Zoloft, really...but everyone's different. Maybe it'll work out for you. :)
Try to get the generic, I'm paying $50 just for that.

see your doctor, start with a low dose and work your way up -- i don't really think that medication can do much work in healing -- but they can definitely give you some breathing space while you work on issues that might be stemming your needs to purge and self-harm. i mean, honestly, what have you got to lose, you know? i think you should at least talk to a doctor to get an opinion -- tell him your situation and if he gives you a stupid answer, keep looking for people who are more familiar with ed patients. but yes, i would suggest it. PLUS, aren't at least trial versions of stuff free?
Wellbutrin usually makes people lose weight (it did for me) but if you have an eating disorder there's an increased risk of seizure. Though, my doctor told me that only really applies to 80-pound anorexics and such.
One thing to keep in mind is most things just increase or decrease you appetite and energy. It's not like they magically make you lose or gain 5 pounds. So, I don't know, in theory you can still lose weight or maintain on a pill that makes you "gain weight."
Anyway I think it's great your considering medication, it's a good step to take.
Thank you for clarifying that, I can't always tell from reading the so-called medical information. Most people i know have seemed to have lost weight on it.
Sure. Also, I added you :)
Yay!
Also you could try looking for a doctor who knows their stuff on something-fishy.org.
I did really well on Zoloft. It was the first thing I tried, because my mother and aunt both had good reactions, and I stayed on for about 2 years. The only thing is, now that I'm off of it, some people have said that they think it made me a little speedy. But I got a lot accomplished in thse two years, so I'm not so sure that speedy's a bad thing.
If you have family members who have taken any sort of medication, find out what, because a lot of time adverse reactions are genetic.
late, but I was stalking your journal because I loveeeee you ;)
Prozac - DID NOT LIke. I started off on 20, and it made me sooooooo sleepy all the time. It took away my appetite a little at first. Didn't work BP-wise... it just made me completely unable to do anything because I was so drowsy all the time. And then I went back to my psychiatrist after a week, and he increased my dose. Then I became a little suicidal and spent a few days in the psych ward. Then I stopped taking it completely. So basically prozac was a disaster for me that didn't help me control my BP at all.
Zoloft - it helps my mood, that's it. No effect binge-purge wise. I like it. I'm more social, more productive... without it I feel like I have to drag my body everywhere to do anything.
They all affect everyone differently, though! Good luck.
You probably won't be prescribed welbutrin by any psychiatrist who knows what he's doing... ;) | |
